Many families - especially for people born before the 1990s - don't have an exact birth time. The good news: most of kundli matching still works.

What works without the time

All eight kootas of guna milan come from the Moon's sign and nakshatra. The Moon moves about 13° a day and a nakshatra is 13°20' wide, so on most days the Moon stays in one nakshatra for the whole day or changes once. If it doesn't change that day, the score is exactly right without a time.

When it can go wrong

If the Moon changes nakshatra or sign on the birth date, the score depends on whether the birth was before or after the change - and Tara, Yoni, Gana and Nadi can all change. Our calculator uses noon when no time is given and warns you when the Moon is near a boundary.

What needs the time

  • Lagna (ascendant) and the houses - they change every two hours or so.
  • Manglik from lagna.
  • The 7th house analysis and dasha start dates (the dasha balance depends on the Moon's exact position).

Estimating a missing time

  • Look for a hospital record, a birth certificate with time, a horoscope made at birth, or a relative's diary.
  • A rough range (morning / afternoon / night) is better than nothing - you can check whether the Moon's nakshatra changes in that range.
  • Birth-time rectification by an astrologer is possible but uncertain.

Enter what you know in the calculator - leave the time empty if unknown - and the report tells you which parts are reliable.
